Clean up text from AI chats
Paste an answer from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot. Citation leftovers, invisible characters and messy formatting are removed as you paste, and you see exactly what changed.
Text copied from AI assistants often carries things you do not want in a document: citation markers such as 【4:2†source】 or [cite: 1], tracking tags added to links, non-breaking spaces that upset layouts, and Markdown that only half renders.
Some invisible characters are more than untidy. Unicode tag characters can spell out whole sentences that people cannot see but AI tools still read, a known way to hide instructions. The cleaner removes them and shows you the hidden text.
Choose how the clean text comes out: Markdown for docs and READMEs, plain text for forms and chat apps, or formatted text that pastes into Word, Google Docs, Outlook and Gmail with headings and lists intact.
Everything happens in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, logged or stored.
Pick a clean-up
- Remove Invisible Characters - Paste text and every invisible character is marked in red, then removed from the clean copy: zero-width spaces, byte order marks, private-use leftovers and hidden tag characters.
- Remove ChatGPT Citations - AI answers often keep their citation markup when copied: strange brackets, numbers and tracking tags. Paste the answer and they are removed, with the spacing around them repaired.
- ChatGPT to Plain Text - Get rid of the asterisks, hash marks and backticks that appear when AI answers are pasted into forms, emails and chat apps. Lists and links stay readable.
- ChatGPT to Google Docs - Pasting an AI answer straight into a document often brings raw Markdown symbols or odd spacing. Paste it here, then copy formatted text that lands cleanly in Docs, Word and email.
- Remove Em Dashes - Long dashes are one of the most noticeable habits of AI writing. Paste your text and replace them with commas or hyphens in one go, along with curly quotes if you like.
- Fix AI Markdown - AI answers often look fine in the chat but break in a README, a wiki or a docs site. Paste the Markdown and get a version that renders properly everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my text uploaded anywhere?
- No. AI Text Cleaner runs entirely in your browser. The cleaning happens on your device and nothing is sent to our servers.
- Does AI-generated text contain hidden watermarks?
- Copied AI text can contain invisible characters, such as zero-width spaces, private-use characters from citation markup, or Unicode tag characters. The cleaner finds and removes them and tells you what it found. It cannot detect statistical watermarks in word choice, which no text cleaner can.
- What are the red marks in my text?
- Red, struck-through text is what will be removed, such as citation markers and tracking tags. A thin red bar marks an invisible character, and a red tint marks an unusual space.
- Will it change my wording?
- No. Only leftovers, invisible characters and formatting are fixed. Straight quotes, long-dash replacement and emoji removal are off unless you turn them on.
- What about code in the answer?
- Code blocks and inline code are protected. Only invisible characters and odd spaces are cleaned inside them, so array indexes like items[1] stay as they are.
- How do I get a Word file?
- Choose For Word & email and press Copy, then paste into Word. For a .docx file, use Markdown Toolkit's ChatGPT to Word converter.
