About the Word to Markdown converter

Why Markdown

Markdown is plain text, so it works with GitHub, documentation sites, note apps and version control. Moving a Word document into Markdown lets a team edit, compare and publish it with the same tools as the rest of their content.

What carries across

Headings become # headings, tables become Markdown tables, lists stay lists, and paragraphs in Word styles such as Code or Source Code become fenced code blocks. Pictures can be embedded in the Markdown or saved in an images folder in a ZIP.

Tips for the best result

Use Word's built-in Heading styles instead of making text large and bold by hand, because the converter relies on styles to find headings. Save older .doc files as .docx first.

What is left behind

Fonts, colours, page layout, comments and tracked changes do not exist in Markdown, so they are not carried over. The content and its structure are.

Frequently asked questions

Which Word files are supported?
Modern .docx files. Older .doc files should be saved as .docx in Word first.
What happens to images?
They are embedded in the Markdown, or saved as separate files if you choose "Markdown + images (ZIP)".
Is my document kept?
No. It is converted and returned straight away, and never stored.
